The reconstruction challenges in Azad Kashmir
The enormity of the loss in the recent earthquake in different
parts of Pakistan and Azad Kashmir is simply mind-boggling
and beyond any description. Going by different statements,
the government of Pakistan is well determined to turn this
tragedy into an opportunity by re-examining many faulty policies
and allocating maximum resources for the rehabilitation and
reconstruction work in the affected areas. How it shall cope
with this gigantic task without flouting the professional
standards and testing the patience of the hard-hit innocent
people is to remain a heated issue in the days ahead.

                  Earthquake disaster in Pakistan
The earthquake which hit Pakistan and Kashmir on October 8
can be described as the greatest catastrophe to befall Pakistan
Entire towns, including the capital of Azad Kashmir, turned
into rubble in a matter of minutes burying thousands of their
inhabitants alive. Villages and hamlets in an area of 28,000
square kilometers were devastated. Houses and farmyards were
catapulted or buried under huge landslides caused by the strong
tremors. The landslides and mud avalanches which followed
cut off dozens of towns and hundreds of villages from the
rest of the world. Roads were blocked or washed away and bridges
were damaged. That made most of the stricken areas inaccessible
                    except by helicopter.

Meeting of Foreign Ministers of Pakistan and Israel
                    in Istanbul
The Istanbul meeting between the foreign ministers of Pakistan
and Israel on September 1 marked a radical departure from
Pakistan’s traditional policy with regard to Israel
and the Palestinian issue. The change, however, did not come
totally unannounced; there had been subtle hints for quite
sometime, the last one was the announcement only a few days
before the meeting that President Pervez Musharraf had accepted
an invitation to address the American Jewish Congress during
his impending visit to the United States.

Passing away of The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques
The 23 years reign of The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques,
King Fahd Ibn Abdul Aziz Al-Saud in Saudi Arabia, which came
to an end with his death on 1 Aug 2005, can be described as
the most eventful period in the current history of that country.
It was marked by a fast changing scenario within the country
and around it; the region saw four bloody wars and a continuing
political turmoil. The collapse of the Soviet Union also had
far reaching repercussions on the Middle East in particular
because it upset the balance of power in the region in favour
of the United States and its protégé Israel
with disastrous consequences for the Arabs.

                  The Road to Holy Jerusalem
Jerusalem has a unique significance as this holy city is revered
by all the three divine religions of the world, namely, Islam,
Judaism and Christianity. For the Muslims, it is not only
the first Qibla for them but also the third holiest shrine.
The Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h), the Muslims believe, started
his famous journey to the seven heavens, called Mairaj, from
there. The Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque are the
cherished holy places for the World of Islam.
