Israeli nuclear scientists are being involved in India’s nuclear programmes. The burgeoning Indo-Israeli nexus against the Muslim World has begun yielding more dividends for Israel in recent weeks. Aside from the new military contracts Israel has garnered from India’s BJP-led Government, the former Israeli Prime Minister, Shimon Peres, who was on a special mission to India on behalf of the Israeli Government, won assurance from the Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in a meeting in New Delhi on August 25, that India would support Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem. Vajpayee is reported to have told Peres that if the PLO’s Yasser Arafat makes a unilateral declaration for the establishment of an independent Palestinian State on September 13, India would not rush to recognise it. As quid pro quo Peres promised Israel’s support to India’s claim for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Earlier, during a visit to Beijing Peres urged the Chinese Government not to help Pakistan in the fields of nuclear and missile technology. In mid-August, Yasser Arafat had visited New Delhi in the course of a tour of Europe, Asia and Africa to update their friendly rulers on the reasons for the breakdown of the US-brokered peace talks between Arafat and the Israeli Prime Minister Barak at Camp David in USA. The stumbling block in the negotiations was Israel’s insistence that it would not give up sovereignty and control over Jerusalem, having won it by force from Jordan in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. In June, India’s Home Minister L. K. Advani and India’s External Affairs Minister, Jaswant Singh, visited Israel and conferred with the Israeli Prime Minister and his Ministers on Indo-Israel cooperation. All the important Israeli newspapers have either fulltime correspondents or stringers in New Delhi. The Israeli radio and TV networks also give sizeable coverage to India. Some Indian newspapers get generous advertising from Israeli commercial and industrial firms based in Israel which now have offices in India. These press and public relations exercises in India for Israel are largely the result of motivation from the Israeli Ambassador in New Delhi.
