Women’s rights in Islam
Islam has given double rights of inheritance to women. They can inherit from their parents as well as their husbands. Besides, it is the duty of parents to look after their unmarried daughters. The husband is also duty bound to maintain his wife and children and look after their necessities of life. In case of any failure on the part of the husband, the wife can sue the husband in court. In case of any dispute with husband the wife is entitled to keep daughter with her till she attains puberty and the boy up to the age of seven years.

Like man, Islam has also given right of divorce by way of Khula to women. Besides this if the husband maltreats her, neglects her or leads an immoral life, the wife can legally seek divorce. In case of divorce it will be the duty of husband to pay for the maintenance of their minor children. At the time of marriage she has to propose dower amount which the husband is bound to pay her. She has the right to forego the same if she desires.

Right of Privacy
Islam fully protects the right of privacy of every individual. None is allowed to violate the privacy of others.Holy Quran orders us if we go to any one’s house, we have to seek the permission of inmates for entry thrice and if no reply is received or no permission is granted, we have to go back without any ill feeling.

Right of Property and Life
Islam has given rights to people to protect their life, property and honour. They can stop by use of force any one who tries to interfere in these rights Furthermore Islam has given right of protection against injustice and tyranny of government in power. One can challenge even a head of the state if he usurps the rights of citizens.

Rights of Accountability
Islam has given this unique right to every citizen of the state to challenge the man in power and call for his clarification for his deeds, misuse of official position and accumulation of wealth if any. The person who challenges the person in authority for explaining the above mentioned violations will not be liable to any prosecution. There is complete equality in the eyes of law for all irrespective of their position or status. Once a woman belonging to the elite class of the society was arrested for theft and case was brought before prophet Muhammad, Peace be upon him, where it was recommenced to him to spare her in view of her noble family background. The prophet immediately replied: “The nations that lived before you were destroyed by God because they punished the common men and let the dignitaries go unpunished for their crimes; I swear by Him (Almighty God) who holds my life in His hand that even if Fatima the daughter of Muhammad, had committed this crime, I would have amputated her hand.”
In Islam public participation in the formation of government and running the affairs of the state is not the monopoly of any person or class of persons. But it is the right of all the citizens of the state, to elect the head of the state, Chief Executive and the members of the legislature. “There is no upper and lower class of citizens, but all have equal right of vote and right of contesting election and participating in the affairs of state.

Islam gives freedom of worship to human beings of all faiths. None is allowed to interfere in the religious affairs of others and none can force any one to adopt a particular religion None is allowed to ridicule and insult any faith or religion. The religious feeling of all should be equally respected. No coercion or use of force is permissible for change of faith.

Islam has given people right of association, right of free expression and right of worship. It has ordained its followers to respect the sentiments of followers of other faiths and live with them in peace and harmony.
